My devotions this morning included the story of David and Goliath. This story is one of the most loved stories in the Bible. I may need to remind you that the story is true; there really was a GIANT names Goliath who was over 9’ tall. David actually fought him with a sling shot and killed him. I encourage you to read the whole story in 1 Samuel 17. Everyone in Israel’s army was afraid of Goliath. In spite of God’s promises and the many times God had given them victory, the army was paralyzed with fear. David saw the GIANT through the eyes of faith. Listen to David’s words to Goliath when the GIANT promised to kill him and feed him to the birds.
“You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel! And everyone assembled here will know that the Lord rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you to us!”
David prevailed not because he was a better warrior than the GIANT, but because he was trusting God who was bigger than the GIANT! What are the GIANTS in your life that keep robbing you of victory? Faith “makes us sure of what we hope for and gives us proof of what we cannot see.” Faith moves us to attempt the impossible. Faith must be in God who can overcome every challenge in our lives. You may be wondering, “how can I have David’s kind of faith?” Faith is gift given to us by God (Eph. 2:8-9), but we must help it grow. Faith grows by hearing and acting on the Word of God (Romans 10:17). Obedience is called faithfulness. Staying close to God keeps our faith strong. We maintain our relationship with God through Bible reading and prayer. To keep our faith strong, we must also stay connected to God’s family. Their prayers and faith will strengthen ours when we are doubting and struggling.
